MECHANICS RETREAT

Mechanics Retreat is our historic parklet, garden and gathering spot located in the heart of the Mexican War Streets

Who are the Mechanics? The area now known as Central Northside was a home for artisans, craftsmen and other trade workers in the early 1800s.

Back then, these workers were collectively referred to as mechanics, and the area was referred to as Mechanics Retreat.

Over time, Allegheny City and the War Streets were built up on this area.

When a fire destroyed several homes in the 1960s, a group of neighborhood citizens bought 4 plots of land at the corner of Jacksonia and Buena Vista.

In 1987 this land was given to The Mexican War Streets Society, and developed as the Mechanics Retreat parklet we enjoy today.

Mechanics Retreat Today

In 2026 the Society, in collaboration with Tree Pittsburgh, began re-landscaping the park with native shrubbery that is friendly for pollinators and humans alike.

The parklet requires ongoing maintenance typical for a garden: watering, weeding, planting and more.
